Daniel de los Reyes was a reporter for Alarma!, a Mexican magazine that published graphic pictures of accidents, murder victims, and scantily clad women. The magazine was widely distributed in the Spanish-speaking communities of the U.S. According to Doug Adair, De los Reyes wanted to volunteer for the paper and for a brief period became the editor of El Malcriado in 1966 .

“I was happy to let him assume the duties as editor,” Adair wrote, “as I focused on the administrative side, sales and circulation.” De los Reyes’s byline is in several stories published by El Malcriado. Adair praised him as a writer but criticized his “sexist” attitude that put him at odds with the staff.
