He grew up in Oklahoma until he was ten when he moved to the Coachella Valley, California, with his family. They lived in the farmworker town of Thermal where his father was a teacher at the local public school, teaching the migrant children, while his mother managed the school cafeteria.<\/span>

Drake studied philosophy at Occidental College and then graduated from the New York\u2019s Union Theological Seminary in 1962. In April of 1962, the same time that C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez left Oxnard to move to Delano, Drake moved back to California and joined the California Migrant Ministry, an ecumenical organization representing Christian Churches of different denominations, and started organizing farmworkers. In 1964 he started working as a staff for the Farm Workers Association (FWA), working under Ch\u00e1vez. <\/span><\/p>\n

During his years working with farmworkers, he served as C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s assistant, organized the union\u2019s first co-op., directed its first boycott, and became a leading organizer in California, Texas, Arizona, and New York. In 1978, he left the farmworker movement and moved to Mississippi where he founded the first interracial organization, the United Woodcutters Association. Later in his life, he worked in Boston where he launched the Boston Interfaith Organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a child, Padilla picked cotton in the fields with his dad and eight siblings. Like many children in the fields, he carried a small cotton sack around his waist. He was only six years old during the great cotton strike of 1933, but he heard the stories and absorbed the essential lesson of organized labor.<\/span>

Although whites and Mexicans picked cotton together in the same crews, the Mexicans lived in one camp and the whites in another on the Hamburg ranch in Los Ba\u00f1os. There was one elementary school for Mexicans and two for whites in Azusa. Housing was segregated, but also movie theaters and public swimming pools.<\/span><\/p>

He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1947, and like many, his perspective changed as he worked with whites and was a squad leader. He went to work for a dry cleaner and went back to the fields, where he met C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in 1955. When Ch\u00e1vez became the national director of the Community Service Organization (CSO), he assigned Padilla to the CSO service center in Stockton.<\/span>

He then thanked the organizations offered support and the farmworkers who went on strike. Later on, she became an accountant for the union, the administrator for the United Farm Workers Association\u2019s (UFWA) credit union, and the manager of some of its social service projects. She was the center of the union\u2019s financial operations.<\/span>
