Born in 1934 in Arbuckle, California, LeRoy Chatfield was raised in Colusa County until 1948, when he enrolled in a Catholic boarding school in Sacramento. In 1949, Chatfield entered a monastic teaching order in Napa Valley and later completed his religious training at St. Mary\u2019s College in 1957. Chatfield later taught in Catholic high schools in Bakersfield and in San Francisco, and was a member of the Christian Brothers, a Catholic order of teachers, and was known as Brother Gilbert. From 1957 to 1965, he taught in Catholic high schools in San Francisco and Bakersfield.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He met C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in 1963, and later, in October 1965, Ch\u00e1vez asked him to join the movement. Chatfield developed the Co-Op movement to provide services for the farmworkers and their families. He raised and administered funds. He coordinated the activities surrounding Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s fast in 1968. He developed the Robert F. Kennedy Farm Workers Medical Plan. In 1972, he helped defeat Proposition 22 which would have prevented farmworkers from organizing unions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although whites and Mexicans picked cotton together in the same crews, the Mexicans lived in one camp and the whites in another on the Hamburg ranch in Los Ba\u00f1os. There was one elementary school for Mexicans and two for whites in Azusa. Housing was segregated, but also movie theaters and public swimming pools.<\/span><\/p>

He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1947, and like many, his perspective changed as he worked with whites and was a squad leader. He went to work for a dry cleaner and went back to the fields, where he met C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in 1955. When Ch\u00e1vez became the national director of the Community Service Organization (CSO), he assigned Padilla to the CSO service center in Stockton.<\/span>

He then thanked the organizations offered support and the farmworkers who went on strike. She was the center of the union\u2019s financial operations.<\/span>
