He was born in 1946 in the Mexican city of Huanusco, Zacatecas, and moved to Delano, California, with his family when he was 10. He led the boycotting efforts in Chicago in 1967, organizing rallies, fundraisers, enlisting student and women\u2019s groups, churches, and other civic organizations. In Florida, he successfully organized a lobbying effort against an agribusiness bill to ban hiring halls. As a child, Padilla picked cotton in the fields with his dad and eight siblings. Like many children in the fields, he carried a small cotton sack around his waist. Although whites and Mexicans picked cotton together in the same crews, the Mexicans lived in one camp and the whites in another on the Hamburg ranch in Los Ba\u00f1os. There was one elementary school for Mexicans and two for whites in Azusa. Housing was segregated, but also movie theaters and public swimming pools.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1947, and like many, his perspective changed as he worked with whites and was a squad leader. He went to work for a dry cleaner and went back to the fields, where he met C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in 1955. In March of 1962, Ch\u00e1vez resigned as director of CSO, moved to Delano, and in September, established the Farm Workers Association with Padilla and Dolores Huerta among the founding members and part of the key leadership<\/span><br \/>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=\"1\" _builder_version=\"4.21.0\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_row column_structure=\"2_3,1_3\" _builder_version=\"4.21.0\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"auto||auto||true|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"2_3\" _builder_version=\"4.21.0\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.21.0\" _module_preset=\"default\" text_font_size=\"20px\" text_line_height=\"1.6em\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 25 years since he met Ch\u00e1vez, Padilla played an important role in the success of the UFW and the farmworker movement. Later on, she became an accountant for the union, the administrator for the United Farm Workers Association\u2019s (UFWA) credit union, and the manager of some of its social service projects.
