Luis Valdez was born in a farm labor camp in Delano in 1940. He studied at San Jos\u00e9 State College, where he earned a B.A. in English and wrote his first play, The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa<\/em>. In 1964, he joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe, where he learned the techniques of agitprop (agitation and propaganda) theatre. He went back to Delano, where his family still lived, to propose to C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez to create Teatro Campesino. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEl Teatro Campesino exists somewhere between Brecht and Cantinflas,\u201d he wrote in his notebook. In early 1966, Valdez also wrote the Plan of Delano to be read in each town through which they marched between Delano and Sacramento. Valdez authored and directed many plays. He also directed the films Zoot Suit<\/em> (1981), based on his own play, and La Bamba<\/em> (1987), based on the life of Ritchie Valens.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These photos were taken in the early fall, of 1966, after the DiGiorgio campaign in Delano, Lamont, and Borrego Springs. The performers are standing in front of Teatro Campesino’s first storefront headquarters, located on the corner of Seventh and Ellington in Delano’s westside. C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez agreed to let the performers have a separate office as they were also active in the farmworker movement. Beto Reyes, Eduardo “El Pirata” Del Rio, Roberto Rom\u00e1n, Bob Fischer, Luis Valdez, Roy Valdez (no relation to Luis), Agust\u00edn Lira, and Felipe Cant\u00fa appeared in the photos. They were all founders of El Teatro Campesino in Delano. Daniel Valdez, brother of Luis Valdez, is not in these pictures.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a child, Padilla picked cotton in the fields with his dad and eight siblings. Like many children in the fields, he carried a small cotton sack around his waist. He was only six years old during the great cotton strike of 1933, but he heard the stories and absorbed the essential lesson of organized labor.<\/span>

Although whites and Mexicans picked cotton together in the same crews, the Mexicans lived in one camp and the whites in another on the Hamburg ranch in Los Ba\u00f1os. There was one elementary school for Mexicans and two for whites in Azusa. Housing was segregated, but also movie theaters and public swimming pools.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1947, and like many, his perspective changed as he worked with whites and was a squad leader. He went to work for a dry cleaner and went back to the fields, where he met C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in 1955. When Ch\u00e1vez became the national director of the Community Service Organization (CSO), he assigned Padilla to the CSO service center in Stockton.<\/span>

C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez briefly addressed the crowd that day. \u201cIt is well to remember that in defeat there must be courage, but also that in victory, there must be humility,\u201d Chavez said. He then thanked the organizations offered support and the farmworkers who went on strike. She was the center of the union\u2019s financial operations.<\/span>
