She worked at a secretary for the Farm Workers Organization (FWO) of Porterville. The FWO was a farm worker organization founded by her father, Jes\u00fas Mar\u00edn Barrera. C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez asked them to join the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) and the members agreed to join and coordinated activities with him in Delano, but the FWO of Porterville kept its autonomy.<\/span>

They worked in the fields picking various fruits and traveled to Delano regularly to deliver money, food, and clothes they collected for the strikers. Yolanda, her parents, and her three siblings, Mar\u00edn, Annie and Mario, helped fundraising for the strikers and were regulars on the picket line during the grape boycott.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 1966 march to Sacramento, Yolanda\u2019s father organized the Porterville area to receive the marchers and provide for them. Her parents marched on the pilgrimage to Sacramento where her father played the accordion while her uncles played the guitar and drums. Yolanda and her family were often present at the regular Friday night meetings at Filipino Hall in Delano where she would interpret. She officially served as a translator for the NFWA in 1967 at union meetings after Juanita Brown and Virginia Rodr\u00edguez Jones left to join the grape boycott.<\/span>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” link_option_url_new_window=”on” link_option_url=”https:\/\/cdm17169.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/FMC\/id\/2247″ sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n

Yolanda Barrera served as an interpreter (Spanish to English) for the Friday union meetings. “Ch\u00e1vez personally came and asked me if I would do it,” she recalled during an oral history interview at CSUN. “And of course, at a certain age, you know, you think you can do anything. So I just said, ‘Of course I could do it.’ I had never translated but I thought, well, what’s so hard about translating? I used to translate the newspaper to my dad….when we were in Porterville, we would get the newspaper and he would say, ‘Here’s the newspaper, tell me what’s in it. Translate it.’ So, I knew that I could translate because I had been doing it for my dad, but it’s different from translating when someone is speaking.”<\/p>\n

Barrera believes she didn’t do a good job because she could translate but couldn’t do simultaneous interpreting. “They would speak and stop, and then I would translate. I would basically, do not a summary, but whatever I remembered of what they had said,” she remembered. “But I would, I would add to it. I would do editing sort of. So for example, if somebody, if it was a politician…they would say like, ‘We promise you blah, blah.’ So I’d say to the people, ‘les est\u00e1 prometiendo blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.’ Whatever it was they promised. And then I would say, ‘todos vienen y dicen lo mismo. Qui\u00e9n sabe si eso va a ser\u00a0 (everybody comes and makes these promises, who knows if they’re gonna do it). And people would laugh and, and whoever was speaking would look at me and say, ‘Why are they laughing?’ And I’d say, ‘I don’t know. No s\u00e9.’ And so…I was translating correctly but I would kind of add my own opinion at times. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to do that.<\/p>\n

At 17, Yolanda was heavily involved in union and community activities including: serving on the California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) advisory board, on the El Futuro Community Organization and El Futuro Credit Union boards, and as president of Los Camaradas, which she founded. She worked as a bookkeeper for Proteus and as a community worker at Woodville Labor Camp during the rent strike against the Housing Authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]Yolanda attended college and obtained a BA in English and a teaching credential. After teaching high school, she attended UCLA School of Law and obtained a JD. As an attorney, she worked at the Office of the Federal Public Defender attaining the Chief Deputy position\u2014the first Latina to do so. She was the seventh Hispanic attorney in the United States to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. She later had a successful private practice career representing individuals charged with federal criminal offenses.<\/span>

She was born in 1928 in Brawley, California, to Mexican parents that immigrated to the United States in the mass immigration of the 1920s to work as migrant laborers in the San Joaquin Valley. The second of five children, Helen started working in the fields when she was only seven, picking up cotton and grapes together with her mother. Her father died when she was 12, and three years later she and her older sister Teresa quit Delano High School to work full-time and support their mother, their sister Petra, and their four brothers. That same year, 1943, she met Cesar Ch\u00e1vez.<\/span>

Cesar started working for the CSO shortly thereafter. During this time Helen kept busy being the primary caretaker of their eight children. When Cesar resigned from the CSO in 1962 and stopped receiving a salary, Helen, 34 years old at the time, went back to working in the fields part-time, picking grapes and assembling cardboard boxes at a local factory.<\/span>

She was the center of the union\u2019s financial operations.<\/span>
