King, from Fontana, CA, was born in either 1902 or 1903 and had been a farmworker since 1934\u2014a period of strong union activism in the fields. Little is known about King\u2019s life and activism. He was a member of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) under the AFL-CIO. It was AWOC\u2019s Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz who started the grape strike in 1965. He became one of 17 members of AWOC who challenged the prohibition by AFL-CIO\u2019s Al Green of joining the pilgrimage to Sacramento in 1966. Thus, the march was planned to pass through as many small towns as possible. The march was led by a farmworker carrying a banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico, made by 22-year-old Alicia Jim\u00e9nez from Sacramento. American and Mexican flags were also carried at the head of the procession. As the marchers walked single file along Highway 99 and on small roads, people used to come to cheer the workers on and offer food or drinks. Sometimes, music performers welcomed the marchers and a few of these local musicians joined the march to Sacramento.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”auto||auto||true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n King became one of the <\/span>originales<\/span><\/i> who trekked the entire distance from Delano to Sacramento from March 17 to April 10. His image was featured in <\/span>El Malcriado<\/span><\/i> as the oldest participant of the pilgrimage at 63 years of age. I could hear him yelling, \u2018Move it up, move it up, you\u2019re marching too slow!\u2019 Wow! He made it all the way to Sacramento\u201425 days, 400 miles\u2014with no problem! Her father died when she was 12, and three years later she and her older sister Teresa quit Delano High School to work full-time and support their mother, their sister Petra, and their four brothers. Cesar started working for the CSO shortly thereafter. During this time Helen kept busy being the primary caretaker of their eight children. When Cesar resigned from the CSO in 1962 and stopped receiving a salary, Helen, 34 years old at the time, went back to working in the fields part-time, picking grapes and assembling cardboard boxes at a local factory.<\/span>
