The first time she was put in jail, she was the youngest; during the United Farm Workers’ grape strike protests in Fresno, she was the oldest, at the age of 75. Day was the editor of <\/span>The Catholic Worker<\/span><\/i> and the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, and she flew to California from New York to support the strike.<\/span> In Fresno County alone, there were 1993 people jailed, including seventy priests and nuns\u2014Dorothy Day was one of them. The back of the habit had the UFW’s Thunderbird and “Viva la causa,” and C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez also signed it. She was held in jail for 11 days, while others had been held for up to 14 days. The strike would end in August of 1973 and the UFW Convention solidified the Union’s organizing efforts against the growers.<\/span> Dorothy Day at the Fresno County Jail, August 1973<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” header_4_text_color=”#FFFFFF” module_alignment=”center” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”|10vh||5vh|false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n On August 8, Joan Baez, her mother, and Daniel Ellsberg visited the farm labor camp where Dorothy Day and other strikers were being held. \u200b Joan Baez sang a poignant prison song to the prisoners in the yard, turning her back to them and singing directly to other prisoners brought to the dining room. \u200b Daniel Ellsberg mentioned that the thought of Cesar Chavez had given him courage during his two-year ordeal in the courts. \u200b It was a peaceful Sunday, and Mass was held in the evening. \u200b The Mexican girls in the camp sang, clapped, and taught the sisters some Mexican dancing. \u200b The power of prayer seemed to have some effect, as Mr. Fitzsimmons, president of the Teamsters, canceled or disavowed contracts signed by another Teamster leader in Delano. \u200b<\/p>\n The morning after her release from jail, Dorothy Day arrived at the courthouse park for a press conference called by C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez. She climbed on a bench next to Ch\u00e1vez and said, “This strike is not just for wages, hours, or conditions. Cesar started working for the CSO shortly thereafter. During this time Helen kept busy being the primary caretaker of their eight children. When Cesar resigned from the CSO in 1962 and stopped receiving a salary, Helen, 34 years old at the time, went back to working in the fields part-time, picking grapes and assembling cardboard boxes at a local factory.<\/span>

Later on, she became an accountant for the union, the administrator for the United Farm Workers Association\u2019s (UFWA) credit union, and the manager of some of its social service projects. She was the center of the union\u2019s financial operations.<\/span>
