The professor asked a group of students if they wanted to go to the headquarters of the strike in Delano. Six students, including Haber, accepted the invitation and traveled to Delano. They spent the weekend, and several more weekends, sleeping in sleeping bags in the Pink House. She worked first as Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s secretary, sleeping on the floor at Dolores Huerta\u2019s house. She got romantically involved with Luis Valdez and they moved into a small apartment together. The building they used for El Teatro also had children’s art classes taught by Kerry Ohta. Besides doing administrative duties, Haber had her first opportunity to perform with El Teatro in Luis Valdez’s play The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa<\/em> in San Francisco and later in an amateur theatre festival at the University of Nance in France.\u00a0<\/p>\n She decided to stay in Europe and settled in London. She reestablished ties with the UFW when she was in London and volunteered for the boycott campaign in England. Her father died when she was 12, and three years later she and her older sister Teresa quit Delano High School to work full-time and support their mother, their sister Petra, and their four brothers. Cesar started working for the CSO shortly thereafter. During this time Helen kept busy being the primary caretaker of their eight children. When Cesar resigned from the CSO in 1962 and stopped receiving a salary, Helen, 34 years old at the time, went back to working in the fields part-time, picking grapes and assembling cardboard boxes at a local factory.<\/span>
