In 1950, he married Amelia Garza Ochoa from El Ojo de Agua in Abram, Texas, a fourth generation American of Mexican ancestry who had been born in 1926. They both worked at a canning factory in Mission, Texas until 1960 when the factory closed. The couple tried picking cotton in north Texas and Arizona, but it was not enough to support the family.<\/span>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”||||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]They moved to Porterville, California, where they found farm labor work picking various fruits. Because the money was not enough to support the family, Mar\u00edn and Amelia needed to take their children to work in the fields. When this was still not enough to survive, the family became migrant farm workers traveling to Vernalis and Yuba City in the summer months picking apricots, plums and pears and working on tomato harvesting machines.<\/span>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” background_image=”http:\/\/farmworkermovement-csun.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/17.41.JK_.N35.B7.01.20.14A-2.png” background_position=”top_center” background_vertical_offset=”40%” min_height=”75vh” link_option_url=”https:\/\/cdm17169.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/FMC\/id\/2328″ link_option_url_new_window=”on” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”auto||auto||true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]Their lives were transformed a few years after their arrival from Texas. Mar\u00edn met Jim Drake from the Migrant Ministry and he urged Mar\u00edn to form a farm workers union to seek better working conditions in the fields. Ultimately, this group of farm workers became the Porterville Farm Workers Organization (FWO).<\/span><\/p>\n The next year, they joined up with C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez and the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA). Ch\u00e1vez named Mar\u00edn as the president of the local chapter and Mar\u00edn\u2019s home was used as an office. Mar\u00edn, Amelia, and their entire family were passionate about their involvement and fought for the union with heart and soul. They engaged in extensive fundraising to support the strikers with collected food, clothing, and supplies. He accompanied the March as the accordion player to lift the spirits of the marchers. His wife, Amelia, was always at his side participating in all the activities and discussing strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n In addition to do union work, Marin was a community activist, serving on the board of El Futuro Organization, el Futuro Credit Union, and the Progresista. He participated in fundraising for scholarships and was later hired as a collector and then manager of the El Futuro Credit Union. He was Grand Marshal of the Cinco de Mayo parade. She was born in 1928 in Brawley, California, to Mexican parents that immigrated to the United States in the mass immigration of the 1920s to work as migrant laborers in the San Joaquin Valley. The second of five children, Helen started working in the fields when she was only seven, picking up cotton and grapes together with her mother. Her father died when she was 12, and three years later she and her older sister Teresa quit Delano High School to work full-time and support their mother, their sister Petra, and their four brothers. Cesar started working for the CSO shortly thereafter. During this time Helen kept busy being the primary caretaker of their eight children. When Cesar resigned from the CSO in 1962 and stopped receiving a salary, Helen, 34 years old at the time, went back to working in the fields part-time, picking grapes and assembling cardboard boxes at a local factory.<\/span>
