In the afternoon, they passed through Terra Bella before stopping at Porterville College. When they reached downtown Porterville, a crowd of 150 people, along with a band, greeted them. A meeting and rally took place at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall, followed by a potluck dinner in Murray Park. Marchers spent the night in homes or sleeping outdoors. She was born in 1928 in Brawley, California, to Mexican parents that immigrated to the United States in the mass immigration of the 1920s to work as migrant laborers in the San Joaquin Valley. The second of five children, Helen started working in the fields when she was only seven, picking up cotton and grapes together with her mother. Her father died when she was 12, and three years later she and her older sister Teresa quit Delano High School to work full-time and support their mother, their sister Petra, and their four brothers. That same year, 1943, she met Cesar Ch\u00e1vez.<\/span><\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=\"1\" fullwidth=\"on\" _builder_version=\"4.21.0\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_fullwidth_image src=\"http:\/\/farmworkermovement-csun.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/HelenChavez.png\" alt=\"Julio Hern\u00e1ndez, Margarito Mu\u00f1oz, Kathy Murgu\u00eda are picketing with other strikers next to a grape field where strikebreakers are pruning vines for the Perelli-Minetti company. That day picketers met at the corner of Pond Road and Browning Road to convince other farmworkers to join the strike. A film crew was also present (but out of frame in this photo). At that time the NFWA was involved in the Perelli-Minetti boycott. Farmworkers were able to get a contract with the company in July 1967. Cesar started working for the CSO shortly thereafter. During this time Helen kept busy being the primary caretaker of their eight children. Later on, she became an accountant for the union, the administrator for the United Farm Workers (UFW) credit union, and the manager of some of its social service projects.
