[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]In March 1966, three US senators\u2014Harrison Williams Jr. (D-NJ), chair of the Subcommittee on Migratory Labor; Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY); and George Murphy (R-CA)\u2014went to California\u2019s Central Valley to investigate the condition of migrant workers and to consider possible federal legislation to protect the rights and improve the labor conditions of farmworkers, much to the chagrin of the growers, who swore that farmworkers wanted nothing to do with a union. At one point, Senator Kennedy denounced Kern County Sheriff Leroy Galyen\u2019s unconstitutional arrest of 20 picketers and exhorting him and the district attorney to read the Constitution. Their arrival proved fortuitous, for it provided C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez and the National Farm Workers Association a platform from which to denounce and address the plight of the farmworkers. It also provided the Farmworker Movement national exposure, something it sorely needed as it took on the powerful growers of California in the grape strike. Of equal importance, the presence of Senator Kennedy, especially in Delano, where he spoke of the importance of collective bargaining and compared the growers to Southern segregationists; in Delano he also met Ch\u00e1vez, and their chemistry was instant; his steadfast support proved important to the Union\u2019s early success.<\/span>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#D22030″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_5,3_5″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#D22030″ width=”100%” max_width=”100%” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”http:\/\/farmworkermovement-csun.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/17.41.JK_.N35.B12.11-1.jpg” alt=”C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez (left) and Senator Robert F. Senator Robert Kennedy first met C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in Delano in 1966 during the Senate Subcommittee hearings. They immediately hit it off and became close friends up until Senator Kennedy’s assassination in 1968. Kennedy became Ch\u00e1vez’s leading advocate in Washington DC and their associates were in frequent contact. When Ch\u00e1vez held an event to signify the end of his 23 day fast for nonviolence in 1968, Senator Kennedy visited Delano again and gave him the piece of bread that ended his fast.<\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”auto||auto||true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]Upon the completion of the Subcommittee\u2019s hearings, Ch\u00e1vez declared the beginning of the march and pilgrimage to Sacramento on March 17, 1966, where after a short police-related delay, over 200 people, including children, marched 300 miles to clamor for better wages and for improved working conditions, stopping for rallies at 25 communities before arriving in Sacramento on Easter Sunday and celebrating mass. By April 1966, DiGiorgio Corporation and Schenley Corporation, the two largest growers in the region, had agreed to hold elections and negotiate with the farmworkers.<\/span>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” link_option_url=”https:\/\/cdm17169.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/FMC\/id\/1646″ link_option_url_new_window=”on” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n
